Tips for Cooling Down After a Workout
Getting a good sweat at the gym shows that you gave it your all during a workout. But just as important as working out is cooling down, which gives your muscles time to recover and helps you to relax on your way home or to the office. Here are some exercise tips for cooling down that you can incorporate into your own fitness routine.
- Slow It Down: Instead of going straight from a high-energy cardio workout to a dead standstill, end your exercise slowly. Spend a few minutes on the treadmill walking at a slow speed to gradually lower your heart rate, normalize blood pressure, and allow your body to cool down. This helps to prevent dangerous blood pooling and can keep you from getting dizzy.
- Stretch It Out: During your cool down, also work to improve your flexibility by taking advantage of a post-workout stretch. Your muscles will already be warm, which means you can stretch more safely and more deeply. Taking the time to stretch properly can reduce soreness and help your muscles recover.
- Re-Hydrate: Because your body sweats out a lot of water and electrolytes during a workout, you could be at risk for dehydration. Drink plenty of water after you leave your health club to ensure that your body is able to maintain proper function. Drink more water than you think that you need to prevent dehydration and painful muscle spasms.
